When the Mind Wanders
Have you ever arrived somewhere and realized you remember almost nothing about the journey?
You stopped at the lights. You gave way when you needed to. You stayed in your lane. Somehow, you arrived safely, yet your mind had been somewhere else entirely.
It happens while driving. Walking. Washing the dishes. Mowing the lawn. We continue through the ordinary routines of life while another part of us quietly wanders.
Those moments have always fascinated me. For reasons I still don't fully understand, something shifts.
They are usually brief, perhaps only a few seconds, sometimes a minute. Just long enough for the routine of the day to drift quietly into the background. It's almost as if the world becomes quieter. The road sounds different. Music fades into the distance. The landscape seems strangely unfamiliar.
At first I assumed those moments were little more than distractions. A mind entertaining itself while the body carries on with familiar routines.
Over the years I began to notice something.
My thoughts rarely wandered without direction.
They seemed to follow quiet threads, returning to questions that had more to reveal than I had first imagined.
It surprised me how consistent those questions became. They weren't random. Again and again they returned to the same themes.
Beginnings.
Consciousness.
Beauty.
The quiet conditions that make things possible.
They returned in different forms, sometimes weeks apart, never quite the same as before.
It left me wondering whether wandering and understanding might be more closely related than I had assumed. The moment those wandering thoughts find their way onto a page, they become something else. Thoughts that seemed perfectly reasonable while drifting through my mind suddenly reveal gaps once they're placed on a page. It feels much like waking from a dream. For a brief moment the idea is perfectly clear. Wait too long, and it slips away.
Other thoughts become clearer.
Occasionally, two completely unrelated ideas find each other for the first time, almost as though they had been waiting for the right moment to meet.
Somehow, the more carefully I look, the less ordinary life seems. Perhaps that has been true all along.
I simply wasn't paying enough attention.
Perhaps tomorrow you'll drive somewhere and remember every turn.
Or perhaps, for a brief moment, your mind will wander again. If it does, I hope you'll be a little more curious about where it goes.
